Wildland Fire in the Appalachians: Discussions Among Managers and Scientists
Roanoke, Virginia, October 8-10, 2013
The Consortium of Appalachian Fire Managers and Scientists (CAFMS) and the Association for Fire Ecology (AFE) are hosting a conference on fire in the Appalachian Region to bring together fire managers and fire researchers to share their experience in discussions of applying fire to a complex and diverse landscape. Reports on 2012 New Mexico Megafires
Wildfire Today has a new post sharing information and links to five reports about two huge wildfires that burned in New Mexico in 2012. The reports, assembled by US Representative Steve Pearce, provide varied opinions and assessments of how the fires were managed, with some authors regretting the abandonment of the 10am policy. 2013 Wildland Fire Potential
The US Forest Service has posted maps and GIS data of the fire potential for 2013. This information is intended to be used in wildfire risk or hazardous fuels prioritization analyses at large landscapes (100s of square miles) up through regional or national scales and can be used to create value-specific risk maps when paired with spatial data depicting highly valued resources. US Forest Service 2013 Protocol

2012 Incident Review Summary
The Wildland Fire Lessons Learned Center (LLC) just released a summary of information gleaned from 96 wildland fire incidents from various agencies during 2012. This document is designed to stimulate and inform discussion among wildland fire personnel and can be used to gain ideas for relevant training opportunities and discussion topics. Natural Resources Conservation Service Longleaf Pine Initiative
USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) announced the availability of technical and financial assistance to help private landowners in 9 states restore and manage longleaf pine. The Longleaf Pine Initiative will incorporate both technical and financial assistance to help landowners improve habitat on agricultural land, nonindustrial private forest, and tribal land. Approved participants will receive financial assistance for implementing conservation practices including planting longleaf pine, installing firebreaks, conducting prescribed burning, and controlling invasive plants. New Interface for Fire Effects Information System (FEIS)
The Fire Effects Information System (FEIS) summarizes and synthesizes research about living organisms in the United States—their biology, ecology, and relationship to fire. A new version of FEIS is being tested now through September, and your comments are welcome. The new interface allows you to search by species name, geographic area, invasiveness, or life form. Longleaf Academy Workshops

New Video: Dormant Season Florida Prescribed Fire
Check out this time-lapse video (spanning over 2 hours) of a dormant season prescribed fire in a mixed longleaf pine / slash pine flatwoods stand in the University of Florida Austin Cary Forest near Gainesville, Florida. This particular stand within the forest is burned on an annual basis during the months of January and February to demonstrate the influence of burn season on vegetative composition, fuel characteristics, and fire behavior. NIFC Wildland Fire Outlook,  January – April 2013
The National Interagency Fire Center Wildland Significant Fire Potential Outlook, released January 1st, states that “Below normal significant fire potential is expected across much of the southeastern U.S. and the southern Ohio Valley for January and February, decreasing to an area from the mid-Mississippi Valley to the Appalachian Mountains by April.” Click here to see the Executive Summary. TNC’s Collaborative Forest Landscape Restoration Program 2012 Report
Check out a recent report by The Nature Conservancy that reviews the accomplishments of the Collaborative Forest Landscape Restoration (CFLR) program, which was created in 2009 to promote job stability, reliable wood supply, forest health, and reduced emergency wildfire costs and risks. In this national report, you’ll find summaries of exciting projects happening in the Southeast, including the Accelerating Longleaf Pine Restoration project in Florida’s Osceola National Forest, the Shortleaf-Bluestem Community project in Arkansas and Oklahoma, and the Longleaf Pine Ecosystem Restoration and Hazardous Fuels Reduction project in Mississippi. Webinar Announcement: Using LiDAR to Map and Assess Forest Structure
The Southern Blue Ridge Fire Learning Network will present a webinar based on a recent assessment of North Carolina landscapes. Presenter Josh Kelly will demonstrate the use of LiDAR to map and assess forest structure, and to compare current conditions to reference conditions determined by LANDFIRE biophysical settings. Rabbit Rules for Prescribed Burns

NC Prescribed Fire Training Center: S130, S190 & L180 Wildland Firefighter Training
Januray 28 - February 1, 2013
Wildland Firefighter Training and Wildland Fire Behavior will be held by the NC Prescribed Fire Training Center located at Montgomery Community College in Troy, North Carolina. This course of study will provide the entry level training necessary to become qualified as a Type 2 wildland firefighter.

Webinar Announcement: Mobile Technologies in Fire and Aviation Management
Join the Lessons Learned Center for a webinar on Tuesday November 20 from 3:00pm to 4:00pm (EST). This webinar, presented by Esther Godson of the USFS Missoula Technology and Development Center, will provide an overview of the USFS Mobile Technology Integration for Fire & Aviation Management (MTIFAM) Program. This program is a national led effort to help facilitate and coordinate mobile technology integration for fire and aviation management. The program focuses on pilot testing new mobile technologies, integrating field innovation and gathering requirements specific to Fire and Aviation Management operations and employees. New Report: Fuels Treatments Reduce Wildfire Suppression Costs
A US Fish and Wildlife Service study at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge finds that "Prescribed fires conducted during the past five years reduced hazardous vegetation fuels, thereby protecting NASA and Refuge infrastructure, employees and visitors by mitigating and minimizing the intensity and duration of wildfires and significantly reducing impacts and costs of wildfires."
